Background
-
The Bible records Jesus' resurrection
after his death & burial.
-
Jesus' resurrection is evidence of the
faith (Acts 1:3, 17:31, 1 Cor 15:12-19).
-
The highlights of Jesus' death, burial
& resurrection are as follows:
Disciples Abandon (Mt 26:56, Mk 14:51-52,
Lk 22:54-62, Mt 27:3-5, Mk 16:10-11)
-
Fleeing, suicide, denial, weeping &
mourning typified the disciples.
Tried, Scourged & Beaten (Jn 18:19-24,
Mk 14:55-64, Lk 22:63-71, Mt 27:26-30)
-
Contributing to Jesus' exhaustion was
a night of trial examination.
-
A flagrum had leather thongs with pieces
of bone & metal woven into them.
-
Unlike the Hebrews, the Romans had no
limitations to the number of lashings.
Journey to Golgotha (Jn 19:17, Lk 23:26,
Mt 27:33-34)
-
A prisoner usually carried his own cross.
-
Jesus began carrying His own & later
it was forced upon Simon of Cyrene.
-
The switch was probably made due to Jesus'
pain & exhaustion.
-
Gall was a bitter & poisonous herb
offered to Jesus as a painkiller.
Crucifixion (Mt 27:38-43)
-
Crucifixion was a tortuous death damaging
veins, tendons & so forth.
Death & Confirmation (Jn 19:28-34)
-
The legs of the criminals were broken
to expedite their death by suffocation.
-
Jesus' legs were not broken because he
was observed to be dead.
-
Water & blood flowed from the open
abdominal wound after He was speared.
-
This is evidence of death by a ruptured
heart.
Pilate Assured of Death (Mk 15:42-45)
-
The centurion was to confirm Jesus' condition
to Pilate Governor of Judea.
-
He would have taken all the necessary
actions to certify His death.
Preparation of the Body (Jn 19:39-41)
-
The cleaning & anointing may not have
been completed due to lack of time.
-
If anointed, the powdered spices would
adhere to the body & inner linens.
-
The wrappings would reduce the chance
of escape if Jesus did not in fact die.
The Stone Tomb & Cover (Mt 27:59-61,
Mk 16:1-5)
-
The stone grave prevented thieves from
tunnelling & stealing the body.
-
The entrance of a Jewish tomb was typically
4 ½ to 5 feet tall.
-
A stone of this size is estimated to weigh
3000-4000 pounds.
The Guard (Mt 27:62-66)
-
The guard could have been either a Roman
or a Jewish temple guard.
-
It was likely a Roman guard because it
was accountable to Pilate (Mt 28:14).
-
The Chief Priests would have bribed a
Roman guard (Mt 28:11-15).
-
They would not bribe a temple guard but
rather order & threaten them.
-
A Roman guard consisted of 4 to 16 soldiers.
-
Falling asleep & deserting position
were 2 of 18 offenses requiring death.
The Seal (Mt 27:66)
-
A Roman seal was set on the stone to prevent
theft of the body.
-
Punishment in breaking the seal was death
by crucifixion upside down.
The Empty Tomb (Mt 28:1-8)
-
The body has never been produced.
